WAKE UP AMERICA a commentary by Karina
Martin-Levinson, RScP
From Gandhi to modern day David Simon
of The Wire, to Bill Moyers, journalist warrior for truth…every once in
awhile – when the “black-out” strap around our eyes snaps and perhaps a
well placed piece of cotton falls out of our ear – then, and only then,
do we temporarily WAKE UP and realize how invisible we have allowed
ourselves to become. We notice that when we open our mouth to say
something we may think as significant or profound, we feel our backbone
slipping at the same moment our words demand an audience. It’s hard not
to notice that in the main, sacred listening, acknowledging what is
being expressed is not too much in vogue as all scurry like industrious
little ants to build a bigger anthill to survive. The news-blasts
periodically tell us throughout the day…”it’s got to get worse before it
gets better”…
So we do our best and tune into shows that tell the
truth as much as is allowable and lean forward with chin in hand waiting
for that glimmer of HOPE. And then what? We hear what we feared the
most…it’s all a made-up play built around politics. All the statistics
we rely on for everything from our kids schools, teacher ratings,
college test results, drug containment, cleaner air, climate
control,……all slanted or re-arranged or as the newscasters called it “juked”.
Case made for the “dumbing down” of anything that gets in the way of
creating the perfect stage for the next “movie” of our lives! Oh, and
yes, we get to be our own stars as long as we don’t make unsavory
political waves. From the insulated cave we crawl out of to hear all
this, the light hurts. As we come out from our cocoon, self made or not,
is our first reaction to cover our mouth, widen our eyes and feel
something strange stirring in our belly? I’ll bet it’s not laughter,
which would be quite healing. What is it then? Is it anger, nausea or
just a feeling of muscle weakness…perhaps from not trying to move our
minds and bodies when we see or hear the truth we feel inside? Time to
hold up the proverbial self-made mirror…we might want to take another
look at whom or what we may have become. A personal decision.
I
woke this morning with these words pouring out of me. Do I know the
answer? No…I don’t. What I do know is that I need to find my voice –
with my family – with my friends – with my community and hopefully, one
day with the world. I didn’t come here to be an ant. I behold greatness
in the Divine Intelligence that is here, has always been here, for each
of us. I think that was so beautifully illustrated this week as a 47
year old Scottish woman, looking proud yet lost, walked onto a world
stage, confounding everyone why she was on this show…and then staring
into the lights, opened her mouth and a voice that was heaven sent
filled the globe as people everywhere took their blinders off. She – her
voice – her fortitude – will never be forgotten. Susan Boyle. If she can
do it……we can do it. WAKE UP AMERICA!
